Matsuo knew; he lifted the child in his arms,
went close to the raft and bent.
He whispered to the child and said,
"Touch the log and say, I let you go,"
As the child bent low and touched the log
it suddenly made a slight move
and then the raft floated away
with the wind and the tide, far away.
