Pearls of Zen

Pearls loosely strung from the Life of the Zen Master Dogen

Vast is the robe of liberation,
formless field of benediction.

Being in the ocean and claiming to see no water,
is not seeing Buddha.
Seeing flowers in spring,
cuckoo in summer,
moon in autumn,
chilly snow in winter,
seeing things as they are,
is seeing Buddha.

On a full moon night,
go into the garden and look at the moon, magnificent in splendor,
pure, undefiled,
perfect, flawless
is the moon in the heart,
joyful, careful, universal mind.

  1. This is absolutely beautiful Sushama!
I'm seeing so many unexpected beautiful things this morning...not expecting them. I guess just keeping my eyes opened has been enough. Thank you!

  2. Somehow I too felt the same way this morning. It was there in the air perhaps. Better not to analyse how and why, when this happens. Best to accept with gratitude. Are you a blogger from India, if I may ask?
