The first ever time he felt himself
in love with a sunflower was
when he saw a single bud growing against a wall.
Every day he walked past the wall,
his canvas strapped on his back.
Every day he saw it grow
from a neglected bud to a swarthy flower,
with none who called it his own
except for the sun in the white-grey sky.
As the time went by,
that little flower was no longer there on the wall.
that little flower was no longer there on the wall.
He painted it from memory
in muted shades of blue for the sky
and a muted yellow for the flower on the wall.

The sunny days of the Netherlands
were left behind.
Life was an endless fight against odds.
He painted the sunflower again,
but not an odd flower single against a wall;
he put it in a large, oversized bouquet in a vase.
It was now jostling for a place with other fellow-beings
and the colors were riotous yellow.
The first sunflowers Van Gogh ever painted.
Later the large bouquets of sunflowers in a vase made him world-famous. #VanGoghFacts
