Iris, the color of eyes, and those of flowers,
as many subtleties as there are eyes and flowers.
Deep, and deeper still are the colors of the minds and hearts.
The shades, the nuances of languages and words,
the blue iris, the color of ocean,
the green of the passion,
the brown of the earthy goodness, sturdy and strong,
and I am the grasshopper among them all.

Art of the Day: Van Gogh, Irises, May 1889. Oil on canvas, 74.3 × 94.3 cm. Getty Museum, Los Angeles.
Van Gogh claimed to have collected "hundreds" of Japanese prints during his lifetime. Although their exact number is unknown, their influence on the artist's work is undeniable. Compare, for example, Van Gogh's "Irises" to "Grasshopper and Iris" by Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai (https://bit.ly/2I8XT7R).
